All things Pumpkin Spice are all the rage now. Pumpkin Pie spice is in everything from your morning coffee and it’s creamer to your mochi ice cream. So what do you do when you have a hankering for something with pumpkin spice, but find yourself just out of your tiny McCormick’s jar of pumpkin pie spice? You make your own! Chance are if you have a decent spice cabinet you will have everything you need and it’s easy as pie – pumpkin pie!Pumpkin-Pie-Spice-01

This is exactly what I did when testing out a new pumpkin cake recipe and I found myself running short on this perfect little spice blend. I made enough to finish my cake and as well as to have some handy for the impending season of baking. Pumpkin-Pie-Spice-02

Ingredients

  • 2 Tbsp Cinnamon
  • 1/2 Tbsp Nutmeg
  • 1/2 Tbsp Ginger
  • 3/4 tsp Cloves
  • 3/4 tsp Allspice

Instructions

  • Blend ingredients together. Store in an airtight container or jar in a cool, dry place.
  • Makes 3 1/2 Tbsp total.

You’ll want to store the leftover pumpkin pie spice in an airtight container or jar on a cool, dry cabinet in your kitchen and then it will last for a really long time.

While spices don’t “go bad” or spoil where they are bad for you, they do lose their potency and flavor over time. After about 2-3 years, ground spices just won’t have the seasoning power as when they are fresh. Whole spices, obviously, last a bit longer losing potency after around 3-4 years. So maybe it’s time to go through the ol’ spice cabinet?

Anyway, you can pick up spice jars like this one for storing your own seasoning blends at World Market for around $0.99 each. They are super handy to keep around for moments just like this. And it’s so much cheaper to mix up your own spice blends and seasonings, plus you can feel good knowing exactly what you put in it. No anti-caking agents here, nosiree.

Enjoy and feel free to tweak this recipe for pumpkin pie spice to suit your taste buds or needs. Some recipes call for mace, some don’t have cloves (I’m lookin’ at you McCormick’s), you may LOVE cardamom like my husband and want to add a teaspoon of it. Basically, use your creative license here. Go, hog wild. Just maybe don’t pumpkin spice EVERYTHING. 😉
