Homemade Chocolate Fudge Sauce

This recipe comes from my grandmother, my mom’s mom, who probably got it from somewhere many many years ago. I just remember it as her chocolate sauce as part of her Ice Cream Pie. She had two desserts that I begged her to make all of the time – one was a simple no-bake chocolate cheesecake (it’s amazing the simple things we love when they are made with love by the people who love us) and her Ice Cream Pie. It’s still one of my favorite memories of her.

I hope you’ll find some wonderful use for this simple, delicious sauce and make memories of your own.

To start, all you need is a can of  PET evaporated milk (not sure why it has to be PET, but the recipe specifically states PET, so I do as my grandmother instructs), mini marshmallows and semi-sweet chocolate chips.

Basically, you melt those three ingredients over medium heat until they become a silky smooth, thick and creamy rich chocolaty sauce. I could just drink it by the glass full.

The process of melting everything together does take a  little bit of time – about 20-30 minutes – because you want to go low and slow. Keep your heat on about medium low to medium and stir constantly so that you do not burn the chocolate or milk.

About halfway through, it starts to look like a yummy pot of hot chocolate with half melted gooey marshmallows bobbing around. No wonder I want to drink the entire pan.

As a side note, this could be a good base for a hot cocoa recipe. I’ve not tested it, but you could try using more milk and less marshmallows. I’m sure that would just be AWFUL, yep who would want that???

You get to this point and may think it’s done, but it’s not quite dark enough or thick enough yet. Continue stirring for 2-5 more minutes and you should have something closer to this…

Thick, rich gorgeous chocolate fudge sauce. Pour it over a warm brownie and vanilla ice cream, eat it by the spoonfuls or heck drizzle over anything – pizza even. Well, I don’t know about pizza, maybe if it’s a dessert pizza.

You can store this in an airtight container in your fridge and then just reheat in the microwave for 30-45 seconds each time you want to use it. It should keep for quite a while.

Here’s the recipe:
