Cooking Tips: Timing is Everything

January 20, 2012 by Kara 2 Comments

Le Time

Sure, sure, you’ve heard the phrase “timing is everything”, but it is SO true when it comes to cooking.

You’re thinking to yourself  “Duh! Of course timing is important!”
But surprisingly, this is one of the biggest gaffes in cooking and even veteran cooks can let time get away from them.

Understanding the importance of timing requires planning. What are you making? How long will each dish take? Does  anything need to thaw/come to room temp before I start? What about resting afterwards? What if I need to bake more than one thing, but at different temperatures? Do I need to preheat my oven? How long should I even cook this for?

See? The questions pile up. Before you even reach for a pot or pan, you need to fully understand every component of everything you’re about to make, how long each thing will take to cook, so that you can look like a superstar when everything is ready at the same time. Instead of letting your prize pork loin rest for 20 minutes while you’re still sauteeing your green beans and warming your rolls in the oven….mmmm…..rolls…..

You don’t have to be a Time Lord to master the art of deluxe timing. But that would be pretty awesome.

Happy Cooking!

See, I always have a trouble with “resting”, especially with a salivating husband hovering around (ok, I’m guilty of that too).
